Overview

Throughout the school year (and for some of us, the previous summer), we have all been exploring the use of our portable scanners, Acer Aspire One netbooks, and mp3 players with a variety of students.

This wiki is a location to share the AT applications of the materials from the "Supporting Reading with AT" workshops focused on electronic text and alternate formats.

You can post ideas, questions, answers, materials--anything related to supporting reading with AT!

Students use the VOR - voice recorder to listen to tests that the resource teacher has recorded. The student can playback the recording, pausing and rewinding as needed as he takes his test. The scanner has not been used as much. Some of the current students do better with the paper-pencil version of the test than the test on the computer.  AMcCormick (PECPS)

Teachers are excited about the technology but see it as time consuming to utilize.  They are very hesitant to even try the devices.  AMcCormick (PECPS)

-Have had success with students using the supports in the therapy room, but it is not carrying over to the classroom.  Students not initiating use, teachers not encouraging use,.....  Anyone doing well getting consistent use outside of therapy?-BHale (DCPS)

- Having a hard time finding time to use technology with staff and students. It was very exciting when all instructional staff received Acer netbooks at the beginning of this school year, after receiving the one Acer through the training. We were also able to setup the same AT "kits" for each school. Again finding the time to training and work with staff and students have become the biggest hurtle. - BBurke (ACPS)

-My netbook will no longer charge--and it is not the battery.  Therefore, it will only work when plugged in which really limits its portability and classroom access.  -BHale (DCPS) Send it back to Acer! Warranty still applies.

-I have used the voice recorder on the Sansa media player to support reading in our Science Text, as well as other passages. One of my students wanted to read a book that was above his reading level, but very age- appropriate, so I entered the text and he was able to take a AR test on a nonfiction book. I am currently using the the Sansa and the Netbook to help my 5th graders learn the words to their farewell song for graduation.  I have downloaded one power point to the Sansa and I am planning to add some more to support our core subjects. My Netbook still works fine and it is plugged into it station everyday. The students can use it to support their writing by typing in a word or sentence and playing it back. My students are using it, but I still need to find the time to build my skills. Our AT team has bought two page scanners that can be checked out. I am still excited about the technology. JFarrar(MCPS)

Explore the USB key. What are your favorite applications? (By May 15, 2010)

-My favorite app is also the hot post.

Could you use the USB in multiple computer locations in your building? If not, what were the barriers? (By June 15)

-

-I shared my USB with some of the teachers at my school and  we were able to use the USB in multiple computers. One of the computers would not open up the program. I think the problem was the computer itself not the USB.

- I was not able to use the USB on our building computers because we are using exclusively Macs.
